In the last two weeks we=E2=80=99ve looked at two areas that call upon us
to apply our logical and critical thinking skills in distinctive
ways, reflecting the particular demands of those areas.

Our aim has been to show that the skills, techniques, and
distinctions we=E2=80=99ve introduced in the course are genuinely useful,
and that they have to be applied in particular ways as we move
from area to area.

In science we learned about deductive and non-deductive methods
in practice, about verification and falsification, about theories
and about the ways science can go wrong. Scientific problem-cases
should remind us of the point and the importance of the
scientific method and good logical and critical thinking in
science.

When we turned to law we saw a new form of argument =E2=80=93 from
analogy =E2=80=93 which we see all around us but which has a central role
in law. We also looked at some distinctive features of legal
reasoning =E2=80=93 law=E2=80=99s attitude to the burden of proof (which ag=
ain
had lessons for our understanding of the role of the burden of
proof in other reasoning contexts) and to authority.

One particularly pleasing aspect of the last two weeks =E2=80=93 and the=0D
course more generally =E2=80=93 has been the quality of the contributions
in the comments on each step. The discussions that have taken
place there show the potential of students to contribute to the
learning process. If you=E2=80=99re not regularly visiting the comments=0D
we recommend that you do so.

This week we go to our third =E2=80=98applied=E2=80=99 topic, morality. Man=
y of
the most important decisions we have to make about which beliefs
to adopt or reject concern moral beliefs. How do good logical and
critical thinking skills bear upon those decisions? We=E2=80=99ll see
this week!
