Dear All,

This is a quick reminder of the upcoming induction events that you are expe=
cted to attend in welcome week.

Your postgraduate researcher experience will begin with Welcome Week (24-28=
th September). You will find a full timetable of the week's events at www.b=
irmingham.ac.uk/welcome<http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/welcome> from early Sep=
tember, but in the meantime I would like to draw your attention to a series=
 of welcome and induction events for postgraduate researchers happening wit=
hin the College which you are expected to attend.

The College of Arts and Law Graduate School PGR Welcome and Induction which=
 all new postgraduate researchers (MA by Research, MRes, and PhD) are expec=
ted to attend will take place on Thursday 26th September in the Bramall Mus=
ic Building on the main campus (R12 on the Campus Map<https://www.birmingha=
m.ac.uk/Documents/university/edgbaston-campus-map.pdf>).  Please arrive for=
 registration and refreshments from 9.00am with presentations beginning at =
9.30 a.m. This event will introduce Dr Rilka Dragneva-Lewers (Director of t=
he CAL Graduate School), provide important information about the role and a=
ctivities of the College of Arts and Law Graduate School and give you an id=
ea of the support and facilities that are available while you are studying =
at Birmingham. Please confirm your attendance beforehand here<https://www.e=

hments.

There will also be School-based PGR welcome and induction events taking pla=
ce separately, as follows:


*         Birmingham Law School: Friday 27th September 2-5pm (Law Senior Co=
mmon Room)

*         School of English, Drama, and American and Canadian Studies: Frid=
ay 27th September 3.30-5pm (Arts Building Lecture Room 6) and drinks/ tea a=
nd coffee reception at 5pm

*         School of History and Cultures: Thursday 26th September 2pm (Arts=
 Main Lecture Theatre - 1st Floor), followed by the PGR specific section fr=
om 3pm and a Welcome Reception Thursday 26th September at 4.30pm (Arts Buil=
ding Mason Lounge [Ground Floor])

*         School of Languages, Cultures, Art History, and Music: Friday 28t=
h September 2pm (Arts Building Lecture Room 2)

*         School of Philosophy, Theology, and Religion: Thursday 27th Septe=
mber 2pm (ERI Building - Atrium, G51,  52, 53, 54)

On a more entertaining note I would like to draw your attention to some les=
s formal events that will be taking place alongside these:


*         Tuesday 1st October 5pm: College of Arts and Law Postgraduate Qui=
z: Come along and meet your new fellow postgraduates (both Masters and PhDs=
) for a friendly quiz about the Arts and Humanities! The quiz will feature =
rounds on each area included within the College of Arts and Law. There will=
 be drinks and nibbles as well as representatives from many of the postgrad=
uate groups, fora, and journals based within the College of Arts and Law to=
 give you an opportunity to find out about them, what they do and how you c=
an get involved - a list will be published on the website closer to the eve=

The also College has a PGR peer-to-peer mentorship scheme. As a new student=
 you can request to have a peer-mentor when you arrive who will help you se=
ttle into life as a postgraduate researcher. These mentors are student volu=
nteers based in your school within the College who will be there to act as =
a guide to the postgraduate community in your area of research and the admi=
nistrative obstacles that the University of Birmingham might throw at you! =
It can be disconcerting moving to a new city, institution or even simply st=
arting a research degree - something unlike almost any other type of degree=
, so they are also here to help support you as you start out in what might =
be a new city, new form of degree, possibly even new country and to act as =
a friendly face and point of contact. To opt-in for the scheme please compl=

Finally,  as a campus-based student you can apply to have an allocated desk=
 in one of the buildings on campus. This will be your desk, allowing you to=
 leave books there, store items and turn it into your research space. These=
 desks generally come with a computer (unless you specifically request one =
without) and are designed to give you a base on campus close to the Library=
, your supervisor (or teaching locations), and to help you be part of the p=
ostgraduate researcher community by giving you a space in an office contain=
ing only other postgraduate researchers. There are a limited number of desk=
s so this is on a first-come-first-served basis where those who cannot be i=
mmediately allocated a desk will be placed on a waiting list. To apply for =
