Please find updates on our activities below: 1) *The British Academy Support for the LSA* For the third consecutive year, the LSA has won a British Academy grant for the pre-conference seminar and workshop of its annual conference. We could not have achieved this without member Carli Coetzee (Journal of African Cultural Studies) who wrote the grant proposal for us. The grant would allow us to give five nights of hotel accommodation to at least 50 graduate students and junior scholars and provide full meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) to 200 participants during the free two-day pre-conference event (June 23-24). This is a partial list of the great things the award would help us achieve. The LSA is grateful to the British Academy for this grant, which remains our biggest institutional cash support. 2) *LSA Lifetime Membership* Mojubaolu Olufunke Okome, professor of African politics, gender, migration, and diaspora at Brooklyn College (The City University of New York) has become the third life member of the LSA. Editor of *=C3=8Cr=C3=ACnk=C3=A8ri= nd=C3=B2: A Journal of African Migration*, Okome, who has also published over 10 books, has supported the LSA since its inception. Not only did she chair a panel at the inaugural LSA Conference at Barnard College (New York City) in 2016, she actively participated in the post-conference deliberations that led to the establishment of the association. She is a mentor in the LSA mentoring program for women graduate students in Nigeria and served as discussant in the LSA-sponsored panel at the African Studies Association Meeting (Boston, 2019). Okome also facilitated two successful panels in honor of distinguished artist Nike Okundaye at LSA 2019. We are grateful for her intellectual and material generosity. Lifetime membership carries a one-time payment of $600. Instruction for membership payment is available here: https://lagosstudies.wcu.edu/?page_id=3D215 *LSA Life members* Judith Byfield (Cornell University) Kristin Mann (Emory University) Mojubaolu Olufunke Okome (Brooklyn College, The City University of New York= ) 3) *LSA Panels at the African Studies Association Meeting (Washington DC, Nov. 19-21, 2020)* For the fourth consecutive year, the LSA will organize panels at the African Studies Association of the United States meeting (Washington DC, November 19-21, 2020). If you would like to participate in our panels, send a 250-word abstract to: lagosstudiesassociation@gmail.com by March 10, 2020. This book is about Lagos women who dress spectacularly, flamboyantly, and extravagantly, wearing a combination of weaves and wigs, false nails, false eyelashes, highest of heels, and immaculate makeup. Lagos. June 25-27, 2020* *Exhibition: =E2=80=9CPostcolonial Infrastructure: Built Environments & The= African City."* by Ng=E2=80=99ang=E2=80=99a Muchiri (University of Nebraska-Lincoln) --- This exhibition interrogates spatial arrangements in contemporary African cities. The state has continuously exercised a monopoly on urban planning and development since the end of colonial projects in Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia. Despite this, urban communities in both capital and secondary cities negotiate unique visions of their lived spaces. Such practices manifest singular ways of navigating the urban experience that are often at odds with, or simply tangential to, top-down infrastructural policy. Looking at residential, commercial, and cultural spaces in Accra, Kumasi, Lusaka, and El Mina, this exhibition explores how urbanity has evolved since the 1960s across diverse African nation-states. Using 15 to 20 large scale prints, this collection extends the work done by such mid-twentieth century artists as Malik Sidibe and Seydou Keita in chronicling urban lives. This exhibition would be positioned at a high traffic area during the 2020 Lagos Studies Association conference. Not only would this kind of energy mimic the vibrant nature of the spaces represented, it would also spark and encourage further critical conversations about postcolonial African cities. The exhibition will include an online gallery that will serve as a complementary text, mimicking the turn to digital devices and personal computing currently ubiquitous in urban areas across the African continent. 8) *Highlights of the 5th Annual LSA Conference. Lagos. June 25-27, 2020* *Author Meets Readers: Engaging The Metal Sculpture of Dotun Popoola (2020)= * This panel launches and presents a new book on the metal art of Dotun Poopola. Titled, *The Metal Sculpture of Dotun Popoola*, the book features an introduction by the editor, Moyo Okediji. The four art historians who have contributed the chapters to the book present their essays, while the subject of the book, Dotun Popoola, provides an autobiographical sketch. The four essays in this book grapple with the dynamics of Popoola=E2=80=99s= art and life as each writer maps an aspect of Popoola=E2=80=99s imaginative journey= , all the back to his infancy. All the four essays provide insightful readings of Popoola=E2=80=99s metal sculpture, both from the structural and cultural perspectives. What all the writers agree upon is the slippery disposition of his work. They all describe the welded metals as sculptures, while acknowledging the painterly sensitivity of the surface treatments. They also fully recognize the enigmatic aspects of the Popoola=E2=80=99s work, w= hich words fully fail to capture. What they all recognize in that elusive character of his work is that it speaks to the present era, using familiar cultural allusions and sophistical technical proficiency. Yet to be fully appreciated is the ways in which Popoola addresses posterity even more eloquently than his messages to the present age. Popoola=E2=80=99s surrepti= tious focus on possibilities and potentiality, rather than the crafty exterior probabilities, is an enchanting extension that enables him to dialogue with the unknown, the arcane, and inscrutable forces of deathlessness, known as the *a=CC=80i=CC=80ku=CC=81* in his indigenous culture. *Panel Chair and Organizer: *Moyo Okediji (University of Texas at Austin) 1. *Dotun Popoola=E2=80=99s Ecological Futurism *by Moyo Okediji (Universit= y of Texas at Austin) 2. *Asaro: Dotun Popoola=E2=80=99s Evocative Hybrid Sculptures* by Michael = Olusegun Fajuyigbe (Obafemi Awolowo University) 3. *Metal, Metaphor, and Materiality in the Synergetic Sculptures of Dotun Popoola *by Kunle Filani (Federal College of Education, Lagos) 4. *Metal-Morphorsis: Dotun Popoola=E2=80=99s Zoomorphic Metaphors* by Kehi= nde Adepegba (Lagos State Polytechnic) 5. *Dotun Popoola: Style and Distinction in Welded Metal Art *by Tolulope Sobowale (Olabisi Onabanjo University) *Author/Respondent* Dotun Popoola (Metal Artist) To learn more about Dotun Popoola=E2=80=99s work, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DbpC2xV-TNfI 9) *Highlights of the 5th Annual LSA Conference. Nearly all the countries in the world have promised to improve the planet and lives of their citizens by 2030. However, progress has been tough in some developing countries, especially in Africa, due to high levels of poverty, armed conflict and other emergencies. This situation may likely get worse as such countries confront with a rising demand for education due to a still growing school age population. This panel invites contributions on the dynamics of education and the Fourth Sustainable Development Goal focusing on the following themes, among others: - Why Equity in Education remains a serious challenge in some African countries - Monitoring of the comprehensive attainment of sustainable development Goal 4 in Africa which is limited by data availability - Supply of trained teachers and increasing demand for education - Access to technical and vocational education, and training among out-of-school children - Realisation of equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes by 2030 for all girls and boys. - The elimination of gender disparities in education and the zeal to ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for the vulnerable ,indigenous people and children in vulnerable situations. To participate in this panel, send a 250-word abstract to Ismail Adesina Raji (rajismail2018@gmail.com), Kehinde Adeola Adekola (kubbie22ng@yahoo.co= m), and Tolulope Adelabu (adelabutolulope9@gmail.com) by March 15. The state= has continuously exercised a monopoly on urban planning and development since t= he end of colonial projects in Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia. Despite thi= s, urban communities in both capital and secondary cities negotiate unique vis= ions of their lived spaces. Such practices manifest singular ways of navigating = the urban experience that are often at odds with, or simply tangential to, top-= down infrastructural policy. Looking at residential, commercial, and cultural sp= aces in Accra, Kumasi, Lusaka, and El Mina, this exhibition explores how urbanit= y has evolved since the 1960s across diverse African nation-states. Using 15 = to 20 large scale prints, this collection extends the work done by such mid-twentieth century artists as Malik Sidibe and Seydou Keita in chronicli= ng urban lives. This exhibition would be positioned at a high traffic area dur= ing the 2020 Lagos Studies Association conference. Not only would this kind of energy mimic the vibrant nature of the spaces represented, it would also sp= ark and encourage further critical conversations about postcolonial African cit= ies.
