This pandemic demonstrates the vulnerability of our= lives and societies but also our flexibility and ability to maintain our o= rganizations, our work and our teaching afloat. I hope you all stay safe an= d can contribute to a post-pandemic future. The first SPT message is about an event at which I hope we can meet again a= nd meet in person. Alberto Romele from the organising Universit=E9 Catholiq= ue de Lille, France, informed us that the website for the SPT 2021 conferen= ce has become live; the address is https://lillethics.com/spt-2021/ The second message is about the efforts of the SPT Board to rethink the SPT= mission and community services. In February I wrote about these efforts wh= en asking for your input. Outcomes of these efforts are a realization that = SPT as an organisation is providing services to its members in quite an unb= alanced way. We offer Techne as journal and we are proud about its ongoing = stream of publications on philosophy of technology. And we support the orga= nization of our biennial SPT conferences, which are important events. Yet i= n parallel to Techne and in between the SPT conference we by and large stop= short in offering services and creating events. The relatively short manag= erial cycle of two years by which SPT Presidents are elected does not help = in creating the needed continuity within SPT =96 many good initiatives of n= ewsletters and repositories has had short lives. The Board has therefore de= cided to strengthen the continuity of SPT by aiming at hiring help for crea= ting and maintaining services, ranging from a newsletter to supporting new = research and conference activities of SPT in between SPT conference. For of= fering this services and for also investing in the SPT website, the Board d= ecided to raise the annual fee to 75 USD for member (50 USD for students; n= o fee for members from developing countries). This decision of the Board to strengthen continuity in the services is part= of the formulation an updated mission for SPT. This new mission can soon b= e found on the SPT website at https://www.spt.org/about-spt/, and is added = below. Two of the values we endorse are Inclusivity and Relevance, and it a= re these values that are calls to SPT to be active in a more continuous and= outgoing manner. The Covid pandemic and the Black Lives Matter outrage are= issues that are concerning SPT and to which we should respond. In the futu= re SPT should have the organization and ability to do so by research, meeti= ngs reflection and outreach. This organization and ability the Board will w= ork on in the next academic year, as part of translating the mission and va= lues of SPT into action. We also submit this mission for your feedback, and= will organise at the SPT 2021 conference opportunities for further discuss= ion. Finally, I am happy that this academic year Kirk Besmer and Ashley Shew sta= rted as editors or Techne, and that Qin Zhu took up the position of treasur= er of SPT. Next academic year I will work with the Board on realising the mission of S= PT. And I hope we all can finish that year in good health at our biennial S= PT conference in Lille. Best regards, Pieter Vermaas President of the SPT -- The SPT mission The Society for Philosophy and Technology is an independent international o= rganization, founded in 1976, that exists in order to * Frame technology as an essential aspect of human experience and objec= t of philosophical inquiry, based on a tradition in philosophy of technolog= y. * Contribute to the thriving of philosophy of technology as a field by * supporting academic and societal recognition for philosophy of tec= hnology and scholars who do work in philosophy of technology; * cultivating a vibrant community for philosophy of technology schol= arship; * supporting careers for those doing philosophy of technology throug= h managing publication fora and other venues that provide recognized academ= ic merits; * promoting excellent education in philosophy of technology; * welcoming diverse perspectives into the field. * Facilitate effective interactions between the philosophy of technolog= y community and * intellectual allies in the academy; * those involved in decisions regarding shaping of technology; * the general public (including through media).
